I cannot give you any good reason to replace Microsofts protection with any of those, although McAfee certainly had a heyday during the Windows XP era when it was actually controlled by a guy named McAfee. Off the top of my head, other AV vendors based in the United States include Comodo, McAfee, Webroot and ZoneAlarm. On the other hand, Norton was spun off by Symantec and recently merged with Avast, so its future may not resemble its past.
Norton has had a strong reputation for a long time.

It is incorrect to call it free: It is rather included in the price you pay for Windows 10 or 11, so why pay a third party for something that will supplant it? But you seem to have strong opinions on this matter. Microsofts AV protection was not very good 7 years ago, but times have changed - in fact it scores about as well as any paid antivirus product. I know the AV test scores have shown it perform much better in recent times. I agree microsoft defender would fit the criteria for trustworthy AV but it isn't remotely close to the top paid AV's in protection or features in my experience.

I would like to know if others have also had similar concerns? Also feel free to tell me your opinion if you feel iam being overly paranoid or overlooking something? (i know US govt is part of 5 eyes program but the average person may not need to be concerned about it)Įven though Bitdefender offers more security features (EX: isolated browser for financial transaction, etc) and is considered slightly more effective than Norton, iam thinking of going with Norton. My guess is as Norton is US based, they would have to comply with much stricter privacy rules of US govt. I have not come across any allegation against bitdefender so far but it is eastern european based vendor. I am ruling out kaspersky for above reasons.
